Battlefield Studios has kicked off its Road to Battlefield 6 event, designed to build hype for the imminent release of this year’s biggest first-person shooter. To everyone’s surprise, Battlefield 2042 has received one major update before Battlefield 6 arrives, and it’s definitely one for the books.

The update brings back the iconic Battlefield 5 map, Iwo Jima, while also introducing a new Battle Pass that carries over to Battlefield 6 at launch.

While this is great news for many Battlefield fans, a large part of the community is unhappy about one condition. To get the free Battlefield 6 skins, players are required to play 2042.

On the game's subreddit, several posts have described this requirement as “torture,” with many saying that playing through 2042 feels “miserable” due to its ongoing issues. One commenter shared, “Everything just feels so floaty and has no weight to it.”

For context, Battlefield 2042 had one of the rockiest launches in DICE’s history. The game was hit with waves of negative criticism, with players calling it a “barebones” first-person shooter that abandoned the core philosophy of the franchise. Its lack of a campaign, abundance of bugs, and unimpressive map selection led to widespread disappointment.

Many also felt that 2042 was not a “true Battlefield” title. By removing the series’ traditional class system in favor of Operators that resembled a “hero-shooter” approach, DICE strayed too far from what fans loved. Thankfully, the studio has confirmed that the class system will return in Battlefield 6.

Still, not everything about 2042 was irredeemable. On r/Battlefield, some players defended the game, saying it wasn’t “all that bad” and had its share of redeeming qualities, especially now that it’s nearing the end of its life cycle. DICE has fixed most of its major bugs, though the criticism of its “barebones” gameplay still lingers.

Some players have also offered advice to those reluctant to return to 2042. To preserve their sanity, they suggest playing just one or two matches a day, since the Road to Battlefield Battle Pass ends in 20 days. That leaves plenty of time to complete challenges while still enjoying other games.

For what it’s worth, many fans are glad 2042 happened, as it forced DICE to learn from its mistakes. Battlefield 6’s open beta has already shown that Battlefield Studios is returning to the franchise’s grounded, chaotic roots, bringing Battlefield back to what made it great.
